Saoirse weighed in at a whopping 7lbs12oz today at the home health nurse visit. She's changed so much in the last week! She's now really filling out her newborn onsies and I can actually put the footie pajamas on her now.

Baby Fat

Yesterday was a day off from work for both of us. Which was good because we had to go back to the pediatrician. She was totally psyched to see that Saoirse had gained a pound! whoo hoo! She weighed 7lbs 8oz. naked and 7lbs11oz with clothes (which is usually how they weigh her). Last time we weighed on that scale was Friday Oct. 3 i think and at that time she was 6lbs9oz with clothes.

After the doctor's office we went over to children's mercy to have blood drawn for her newborn screening test. It's state mandated and they usually do it before you leave the hospital, but since she wasn't born in a hospital we have to run around afterwards and get all this stuff done. Having blood drawn from a newborn is NOT a good time by the way. they tourniquited her arm and stuck a needle/tube/syrynge combo in and she SCREAMED, oh how she screamed. Mark said he wanted to punch the nurse. i was too tired to even have any thoughts so I was impressed that his brain is still actually functioning. :) mine is NOT.

Clinic Visit

Wow, those people at Children's Mercy don't mess around. We met with the plastic surgeon, the nutritionist, the lactation specialist, the geneticist, a social worker, and the lady who gave Saoirse her newborn hearing screening (she passed).

The plastic surgeon was really super nice. He didn't find anything wrong with her palate and said that when she is older (4yrs min.) we could have her "incomplete cleft" lip fixed. They will want to see her on an annual basis from now on to check on her development.

The nutritionist and the lactation specialist worked with us the most. She seems to be doing much better at breastfeeding (at least while we were there). They said she was still in the very bottom range of where she needed to be weight wise but that at least we seem to be on the upswing. She weighed in at 6lbs. 11oz today. They want to hear back about her weight updates over the next few weeks.

The genetics guy asked alot of family history questions and then explained how cleft lips/palates happen although when he finished I still had no idea what he had just said. lol. (i'm incredibly tired these days and my brain is toast, but also he droned on and on and used big words. :D)

The social worker comes in to make sure families have access to all the resources they need. We ended up talking about our water birth because one of the other team members told her about it. We kept having to tell people that she was born at home when they asked questions about her birth and I guess it was interesting enough to chat about amongst themselves. It was funny having to explain the home birth and her name about 10 times.

I was just looking up cleft lip on Wikipedia and found an interesting tidbit. If it's true, she has a microform, which is the same thing as Joaquin Phoenix.

From Wikipedia:
A mild form of a cleft lip is a microform cleft. A microform cleft can appear as small as a little dent in the red part of the lip or look like a scar from the lip up to the nostril. In some cases muscle tissue in the lip underneath the scar is affected and might require reconstructive surgery. It is advised to have newborn infants with a microform cleft checked with a craniofacial team as soon as possible to determine the severeness of the cleft.

Anyway so we've got a pediatrician visit on Monday morning to check weight and another weight check with the home health nurse on Thursday.

That's all for now. g'nite.

Nurse Visit

According to the home health nurse's scale, Saoirse has gained 11 ounces since Sun. That's pretty incredible. She's definitely looking chubbier, but I'm suspicious of this lady's crazy scale. lol.

Will update again tommorow after the appt. with the Cleft Palate Team at Children's Mercy.

News items

-got an appt. to see the dr. at the cleft palate clinic on friday. just to make sure her cleft is truly closed.

-Mark has finally stopped calling Saoirse "booger" and switched to a more Mommy Approved nickname, "little mouse." (Thanks to Sandy for shaming Mark into changing!)

-Speaking of nicknames, here are a few more: Pookie, Pooks, Boots, Pookieboots, Honeyboots, Little One, Snuggleboots, Snuggles, Morsel, Nibbles, Miss Lady, Ladyboots, Noodle, BooBerry, Smidgen, and Mewboots.

-Today Saoirse got lots of kisses from her friend Ilena. She also had a tupperware lid laid on her face and was offered a KU ball cap to wear. Nanny Phoebe intervened just in time to intercept a flying toy maraca that was being enthusiastically "shared" with her. lol. Ilena also enjoys waving at Saoirse from across the room, or in her face and telling her "hi". it's very cute. :)

First Day Back at Work

Everything went well today! It wasn't totally nutz like I thought it would be. We've switched bottles and it takes only 20 minutes to feed baby now instead of the 90 it took before. We're using the Dr. Brown's brand now. much better!

Also, had a visit from the Children's Mercy home health nurse yesterday. her scale was totally off and rendered her visit pretty much useless. I doubt Saoirse lost 7 ounces in 2 days. lol. She's coming back thurs. to check again. I'm trying to get an appt. to go to the lactation clinic at Children's Mercy this week too. We might talk to someone in nutrition as well. Spoke with the Cleft Palate Clinic who apparently didn't think she needed to be seen. I'm kinda irked about that, I really would feel better if a specialist looked at her. Anyway, we'll see what becomes of that. Right now she seems to be feeding alot better so hopefully we'll start to see the lbs. pile on.
