Pears: The Epic Journey

We nixed the whole "New Foods Thursday" idea because of "digestive issues" lol, and gave her Pears on Tues. They were apparently very sour, but did the trick.

The Cloth Sloth

Ok, I'm not sure what a sloth has to do with this post, but they are cool and it rhymes with "cloth."

Anyhoo, I wanted to share an update on our diapering journey. Currently we are using unbleached Indian prefolds with the G-diaper instead of their flushable/compostable disposable insert.

To be honest, it's easier to use a cloth insert than try to tear apart the flushable and put it in the toliet. Plus our toliet sucks and isn't doing a great job of getting everything down in one go so it was becoming an issue, and I felt guilty flushing so much. I ended up just throwing them away which I guess isn't too bad since they are biodegradable. Anyway, all of that kind of pushed me along towards my goal of going all cloth.

I was taking baby steps. I slowly phased out using my biodegradable disposables at night. Those were the last to go. Now, at night I've been throwing a "doubler" in there as well for extra absorbency. My doublers are cotton velour I think, something like that. It's mega-bulky but No leaks yet!

When I switched to cloth 100% I realized that disposable wipes are a massive pain to deal with. You put your cloth stuff in a "wetbag" or in the diaper pail, but then you have to throw away the wipes seperately. Ya, I'm too lazy for that. So I picked up some cloth wipes at Happybottomus and looked up a simple wipe solution recipe (you can buy it pre-made as well) and I was back in business. You can either put the solution in a spray bottle or you can put it in an old disposable wipe container to either dip your cloth wipes in or just throw them in there if you want for "pre-moistened". I ended up using the spray bottle method alot more so I'm sticking with that for now.

There are tons of recipes for the solutions, but the basic is: 2 c. distilled water, 2 Tbsp. cooking oil (i'm using organic olive oil), and 2 Tbsp. baby wash (we use California Baby). It works great! I still have leftover disposable wipes that I thought i'd use up here and there but after I'd been using my homeade solution for awhile, I tried a disp. wipe and she started crying! That suprised me since they were the "sensitive" kind... apparently not THAT sensitive I guess.

One of the things that had me the most nervous about going cloth was the washing part. So far we've just had breastmilk poop which isn't hard to deal with. But things probably will get more complicated soon. Right now we're using Charlie's Soap which worked so well that we use it for all our laundry now. It makes your clothes all soft without having to use fabric softner. And it's enviromentally safe and biodegradable!

I'm getting brave and thinking about branching out and trying a couple of different kinds of diaper covers. The G-Diaper works great but I'm curious to see what else is out there. I'll update on how that goes.

The Good Stuff

So we started rice cereal on Saturday and we're working up from soupy to less soupy. I have no idea how much to give her really, it seems like she'd eat forever if I didn't run out. lol. Apparently she inherited her parents love of eating. :D We decided that Thursdays will be "New Food Day." We've got organic bananas on the menu for tomorrow.

In other news: she can now sit up in a restaurant high chair and in a shopping cart! Yay! Mommy can eat at least part of her meal with two hands! And we last a little longer at the grocery store with so much more to look at.
